Imagine a day when every child has art
at his or her fingertips and when kids use colors, design, movement and sound to express themselves creatively in the classroom. Express Yourself was organized so that our supporters could experience and enjoy the vast opportunities that we are able to provide to thousands of students in Los Angeles County and the Central Valley. P.S. ARTS students thrive in an environment that encourages self-expression and for one Sunday afternoon, supporters’ families can too!
This incredible event takes place Sunday, November 15, 2009, from 11-3 PM at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Guests are greeted by rows of arts booths and endless art supplies as professional artists and teachers guide children through a rich array of exciting projects. Bright colored beanbag chairs, oversized pillows and a rainbow rug are set before a stage for dancing, singing, and inspirational performances. Music fills the space as hundreds of children roam the booths exploring and making new friends. The event concludes with a stage show featuring students from the P.S. ARTS program, and often a performance by a special guest. Dozens of L.A.’s top restaurants and caterers will fill the venue with signature treats for everyone to enjoy. From Katsuya sushi to In n’ Out burgers, from Casablanca quesadillas to Toscana’s homemade pasta, every craving will be indulged.
Many California public schools have no arts programs at all – no painting, drawing, acting, singing or dancing. For 18 years, P.S. ARTS has been working to restore arts education to these schools, serving those schools most in need first. Since our founding, we have positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of children attending Title I and other severely disadvantaged schools. This year alone nearly 11,000 students will participate in P.S. ARTS programs once a week, every week throughout the school year. P.S. ARTS programs allow the most disadvantaged students to use their imaginations and express their ideas in a safe and supportive environment at one of our 26 partner schools.
Are there still thousands of kids without any arts programs in their schools? Unfortunately, yes. Can your attendance, contribution and participation make a difference? Absolutely, yes. Please don’t miss this remarkable day to support the restoration of arts education to public schools.
